. Brisk Swing, Maria Schneider vibe
. 5-6 minutes
. solos: Trombone & Tenor Sax
. Trumpet 1: written A, just above staff
Lifeblood has echoes of Maria Schneider's earlier works in a chart that's approachable by more bands than many of her great charts (i.e. no woodwind doubles, modest brass ranges).
This work has rich, dense harmonies; lyrical melodies over top of a brisk, moving rhythm section; and modal solo changes for your tenor and trombone improvisers. Lifeblood works great mid-set. It's also makes an unusual–but effective–opener.
Many thanks to Chris Merz and his always-superb University of Northern Iowa Jazz Band I for their stellar recording heard below. It's from their 2012 CD The Hard Way.
