It is difficult to not have fun with this chart. Free Food? is a catchy, good-humored Calypso in C minor. It employs cute usage of trumpet mouthpiece "quacks" (it's an ode to ducks, after all).
There are 16-bar solos scored for several players, making it a great vehicle for featuring a handful of soloists, but much more interesting than endless blues choruses.
You'll find meaty saxophone and trombone soils, and a fun, funny ending. Free Food? works great just about anywhere in a concert set, and is a super closer on a festival program.
The recording you hear above is by a band I assembled right here in Central PA! Dig the soloists: Dale Orris (trumpet), Kevin Supina (bari), Paul Leskowicz (trombone), Matt Donovan (alto), Jonathan Ragonese (tenor), Steve Rudolph (piano), and Aaron Kimmel (drums).
Your purchase will include:
