This was in the subject line of an email I received from Cheverus HS (Portland, ME) band director Chris Humphrey.
Chris went on to explain that his school's jazz combo was selected as the Outstanding Jazz Combo at the 2015 Clark Terry UNH Jazz Festival (UNH = University of New Hampshire). But, here's the catch: their entire set was from the HirschMusic catalog.
I don't know what to say about this one. Talk about having confidence in his students and in their collective programming choices, not feeling the need to pepper their set with standards.
Dang. This is just cool.
BTW, here's their program:
- Ale House Rock (blues in F-minor-ish)
- Lotus Blossom Spiritual (modal ballad: Giuffre meets Coltrane?)
- Catch Me if You Can! (burning modern swing)
Congratulations to these hard-working, hard-playing young musicians (and their bold director)!
