"Mirage" wins Ithaca contest

My new jazz ensemble work Mirage just won First Place in the 2015 Ithaca College Jazz Ensemble Composition Contest (pro/college composer division).

The IC Jazz Ensemble will perform the work on March 2 with guest saxophone soloist Rudresh Mahanthappa. Double woo-hoo!

Here's the official announcement from Ithaca College: http://www.ithaca.edu/music/ensembles/jazzensemble/CompContest/

I plan to publish Mirage for jazz ensemble some time this spring. In the meantime, though, you can listen to a killer performance of it by the Towson University Jazz Ensemble. Their director Jim McFalls saw great possibility in the ambient-sound parts of the score and coaxed more color out of his wind players than I had imagined. Thanks, Jim!

p.s. The sextet version of Mirage is already available on my site, right here.
