"Grade 2 Jazz" sneak preview

A couple months ago I wrote a new piece for my friend (and local band director) Johanna Steinbacher and her Mt. Nittany Middle School Jazz Band.  (Extra cool factor: my middle daughter Eva is an 8th grade trumpeter in the band)

We were shooting for something that could be an accessible vehicle for improvisation, that would pose sufficient challenge on the ensemble parts, would complement her other selections (Big Noise from Winnetka and 'Round Midnight), and would be a lot of fun for the middle schoolers to play.

I am pleased with the resulting tune, and hope to have it in publication later in 2014.  In the meantime, here's the score and a bootleg recording made at our monthly reading-band gig last night.

Any comments, observations, or other thoughts, are welcome, especially from band directors.
