While the big-time print music publishers release new titles on an annual basis, I am able to release titles year-round, as they're written. And I can do this (thank you internet!). The only hangup is that there's a good deal of back-end-not-related-to-composing effort required to prepare music properly for publication.
So, I've begun to sell pre-publication music, while Finale's engine is still warm from the part extractions. I'll save all of the behind-the-scenes work for later, after I've written a bunch of music and can batch-process on the artwork, program notes, PayPal codes, etc. And when I do that, the prices go way up.
This approach allows me to make new music available to you now, when it's written. For example, If I were to write a new Christmas carol arrangement in November, and you happen to need something for an upcoming gig or concert, you can get that music when you need it — instead of having to wait an entire year for your 2013 gig season.
And, since these charts haven't been put through all of the paces needed for full publication with my distributors (JW Pepper, Marina, Stantons, Penders, etc), I offer them for sale at steeply discounted prices. Of the Fast Track Charts I've posted so far, the saxophone quartet arrangements are on sale for $5 each and the jazz ensemble chart is $20. When these are published in full, the prices will be $15 and $50, respectively.
On the horizon
I will have more combo charts coming this spring. I'm also working on a series of 5-horn a capella charts, similar in vein to the Hornheads. Beyond that, who knows?
